Just today some of us joined the local unschoolers at their park day at Mueller Lake (a short walk from the school).  Our students had a blast rolling around in the grass:

There has been a lot of art happening.  Mostly painting and drawing, but also some more crafty things like knitting, sewing, silkscreening, making dolls out of sticks, etc.

Outdoor activities have included playing on the playground, ripsticking, skateboarding, bouquet picking, butterfly chasing, rock studying, wandering, and relaxing.

We built these little straw rockets one day:  http://www.instructables.com/id/Ultimate-Straw-Rocket!/ They are fun and easy to build and can be shot off with a bike pump.

We have started using the church’s awesome kitchen!  One day we made pizzas:

Another day we took a trip to Boggy Creek Farm where we acquired beautiful, fresh vegetables and strawberries.   These were quickly brought back to the school and transformed into savory crepes for lunch and sweet ones for dessert.  Well, some of us skipped straight to the sweet! Â

Our oldest student has spent a lot of time this semester studying for the ACT and touring and applying to colleges.

Some of our students spend a fair amount of time watching movies and playing video games.  For many prospective parents these are the most controversial activities allowed at school.  Ironically, watching a movie is one of the few activities that sometimes everyone present in the school will participate in together-definitely a bonding experience.  Critics often underestimate the social and strategic skills developed by many video games.  Here is a great blog post on the positive aspects of video games with a lot of super interesting links to other posts and articles:  http://www.swissarmywife.net/2010/04/if-youre-bored-maybe-youre-boring/ Here is another great post on gaming written by a 12 year old boy:  http://sunriseovertheiceberg.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/in-depth-on-no-screens-week-at-the-library/
